I’ve been pretty slack on the blog front lately.  This post is to show off a pair of Canada’s Finest as they took a road trip from New Brunswick and came to Halifax for a weekend.  While they were here, we got together and strolled the waterfront and Spring Garden Rd while taking pictures as we went.   I met up with them at Alicia Melanson Hair & Makeup on Barrington St and we went from there.  [Shameless plug] If anyone is looking for a great spot for hair and/or makeup, Alicia should be  at the top of your list!  [/Shameless plug].  I look forward to heading to St. Andrew’s next month to shoot their wedding!!  Check out the slideshow from Debbie and Matt’s engagement session.

Tasha and Matt got married in May at Pier 21 in Halifax.  I can’t say enough about how awesome that place was to shoot in.  Huge windows brought in amazing light during their ceremony which made for some great stuff.   I’ve had the pleasure of knowing Tasha for a couple years now.  Her and Matt have been together since high school.  They do make a pretty hot couple, if I do say so.

Usually weddings are pretty routine, you get ready, you get married, you dance and party.  Sounds about right, right?  Well, that’s pretty much how this day went to…until the dance part.  During Matt and Tasha’s first dance, I was doing my thing, when all of the sudden, through my viewfinder, Tasha is upside down as Matt is tossing her into the air like a ragdoll.  Amazing.  She landed on her feet and they kept going.  I’m sure someone picked my jaw up off the floor.   Ginger Rogers ain’t got shit on Tasha (Matt, you make a good Fred Astaire, too).   I did manage to get a pretty tight shot of the flip, which I’ll add to the slideshow tomorrow.  Check back for that one.

Overall, an amazing day.  An amazing couple.  Great friends and family.  What more could you ask for on the best day of your life?

Behind-The-Scenes:

As most photographers do (or should), I bring an assistant with me to each wedding.  This time, I was lucky enough to be able to work with my wife (for the first time) who volunteered to help me out.   We shot some getting-ready photos and headed to Pier 21 for the ceremony.  As I was setting up, I realized that I left a piece of equipment behind…a part of my flash that is essential for me to use, especially during the reception.   I tracked down the owner of the house we were at and explained the situation.  He graciously handed over his house keys.  Krystle  was off like a (pardon the pun) flash to save the day.  She returned shortly after — my savior.  Just another reason that any photographer working all day should have an assistant work with them.  Thank you, Wife.

I often get enquires from people looking for my photography services, be it for portraits, engagement sessions or weddings. Recently, I got an email from a woman named Catherine. She is getting married next year to a fella named Curtis. They don’t live near me so we weren’t able to meet up to talk about the wedding and get to know each other a little better. Instead, as I have a few times in the past, I asked Catherine to send me her favourite picture of her and Curtis and tell me why it’s her favourite. Well, I received a cute picture of the two of them and the explanation I got as to why it was her favourite was this:

“I choose this one since I’m not blinking (which I often do in photos) and because Curtis is smiling normal (sometimes the camera catches some funny faces lol).”

I asked her if I could tell the world about her picture because it made me smile. So with her permission, here’s the photo.

Aren’t they a cute couple?? I tried to get her to send me one with the funny faces she mentioned but she wasn’t having any of it.

It’s amazing how many people are afraid of blinking when having their pictures taken. I’m starting to think it’s psychological. If you think you’re going to blink, then you’ll blink. Lucky for Catherine, and everyone else out there, I have my super sneaky tricks to ensure that you won’t blink during those posed pictures that your mom wants for her wall (Living room or Facebook). So all you folks out there who are blinkers, fear not! I mean, worst case scenario, I have a pretty good staple gun.

I’m getting tired of hearing my kids singing “Rain, rain, go away…come again another day.” After the first day it was cute; After the second week, it was getting old; We’re now into the second month and I can’t take it anymore. Is anyone else sick of the rain around here? I’ve overheard more than a few people talking about the bad weather we’ve had lately. Tasha and Matt’s wedding is on Saturday. I’ve been really hoping that the rain is going to end for their day. She mentioned to me the other day about the whole “It’s good luck if it rains on your wedding day” theory then announced that she thinks people will tell you anything on your wedding day, including making up lies about the weather if they think it’ll make you feel better.

I took a peek at a calendar of our weather since April 10th and included the forecast for the next few days. Thank you wunderground.com for confirming mine and everyone else’s angry thoughts about the weather. Spring has sprung. April showers are suppose to be over. Bring on the sunshine any day now. We better have the best summer on record to make up for this year’s spring. Have a look at the calendar of Halifax’s glorious weather so far this spring. For any tourists reading this who may be wanting to visit Halifax to take a stroll on the waterfront of Historic Properties, or ride the Harbour Hopper, or any number of outdoor activities that Halifax is known for…you might want to hold off for a bit. Check out what we’ve had the pleasure of living with lately.
